Braille Instruction

The reading and writing of Grade 1 & Grade 2 Braille is taught at the VIPS center. The instructor is Roxann Keys. She has 40+ years of experience using and teaching Braille. Braille is a means of communication for the blind and visually impaired utilizing a series of one (1) to six (6) raised dots-called a cell. In Grade 1 Braille the combination of one (1) to six (6) dots in each cell represents a single letter, number, or punctuation mark(s). Grade 2 Braille is a combination of Grade 1 Braille and new contractions which increase the rate of reading speed.

Support Group

- Facilitated by Janet Gearhart -

VIPS hosts a support group for people dealing with vision loss and the impact it has on their lives. The meetings are free of charge and open to individuals with vision loss/blindness, their spouses or significant others, family members, friends and care-givers. The Support Group is a safe place to discuss issues you may be experiencing regarding vision loss. In 2010, we devoted many of our group meetings to discussing the five (5) stages of Grief & Loss. Our discussions are thoughtful, informative, inspiring and encourage independence.

Effective 11/28/2011, the VIPS Support Group will be meeting at the Stanislaus County Office of Education (SCOE) in the main building or across 12th Street at the Martin Petersen Event Center. The meeting on the 28th will be at the Event Center (see address below). We will distribute a list of the location sites for the remaining meetings on the 28th.

Date & Time: every other Monday, 10:30-12 noon (Except when there is a Holiday)
Location: 720 12th Street, Modesto, CA (Martin Pertersen Event Center)

The VIPS Board of Directors, Staff, and Support Group Members are truly thankful for Janet's Flowers donating their Wedding Chapel for our Support Group meetings over the past year and a half. The value of their generosity and spirit of community support cannot be measured. A special "Thank You!" to Johnny, Ann and Pam for all that you have done for VIPS. We would encourage you to consider Janet's Flowers for your future special events and personal gift-giving needs.
